About: James O’Driscoll, who has spent the past number of years investigating the Baltinglass Hillfort Complex, now presents his latest findings in an online article under the aegis of the scholarly journal ‘Antiquity’. The author describes a cluster of cursus monuments that have been discovered using the newest archaeology tools and techniques. This is the first time that a cluster of such monuments has been discoved in Ireland. The author concludes that the monuments “demonstrate a clear connection between the dead, major solar events and seasonal farming cycles”.

About: This is a short article from the Miscellanea section of the journal. Bullaun Stones are blocks of uncut natural stones into which oval or circular basin shapes have been carved out. This pair of stones came to the attention of the authors by their appearance on a then recently-issued ordnance survey map and they do not seem to have been recorded in detail before. They, and 2-3 others in the neighbourhood are thought to have been associated with Templeboden and St. Boden’s Well.

About: One of the many resources of the Representative Church Body Library is a collection of 19th and 20th century architectural drawings of Church of Ireland churches and cathedrals. In 2011 the Library secured a grant from the Esme Mitchell Trust to conduct a pilot project to digitize and catalogue these drawings. A subsequent grant from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has enabled further work to be done. As a result, an important heritage resource is now freely available online. This blog entry relates to architectural drawings of All Saints Church, Carnew from around 1846-47.

About: The property tax system of 1850’s Ireland, otherwise known as Griffiths Valuation. It was the first major attempt at valuing property. This section lists the small part of the Parish of Hollywood in West Wicklow, which was covered by the Poor Law Union of Naas in County Kildare. Most of the Parish of Hollywood was within the area covered by the Poor Law Union of Baltinglass.
